Jarak A taster of what was to come on Samhainn. While the artists were clearly still finding their favoured style at this point, this shows that they already knew how to make darn good music. This is useful (and enjoyable) 'trying things out to see what works best'.

Andreas Muhr I usually prefer doom and stoner music but this mixture of different metal styles and Scottish folk is really just awesome. Check it out if you are looking for something different and unique!

Leland Sage This album has a great mix of black and death metal styles incorporated with traditional folk elements. The blended genres sound natural and cohesive, and the production is crystal clear.

Fàilte 04:56
Tharraing an cuan dlùth orm agus bha an guth soilleir Fàilte gu òran dubh na Cailleach Placid once, awakened now Malice in intent Iron turns to stone once more As old and frail lament One last task awaits us still Before the dying day Cuidich mi mo charaid Thoir dhomh do neart Fiodh Construct deliverance from sanctum Iarann Grind the earth into a blade Ohr Pulls the hearts from safer harbours Sannt Draws the fools to early graves Oidhche Give to us the veil of shadow on approach Madainn Light the way to ruined future torn asunder Teine Cleanse and sanctify the towers of the blind Fuil Feed the thirsting soil, turn the wheel anew That silver stretched above Mercury below Its call brings bleaker times Colour drained in snow Whispers over horizons Stir you from your sleep The light that faded first Is the last you keep Fiodh Construct deliverance from sanctum Iarann Grind the earth into a blade Ohr Pulls the hearts from safer harbours Sannt Draws the fools to early graves Oidhche Give to us the veil of shadow on approach Madainn Light the way to ruined future torn asunder Teine To the flesh and the sanctification of fortresses held by the blind Fuil As the wine to the soil below to drive out phantom dormant in mind Hear echoes hollowed still Rings once but screaming clear That stone now ground to dust As your shade beckons near Wearied clocks trace eights The grains lie still and blue Glance not back at ash now The stems will rise anew

Fathoms 02:59
Northmost point of a western shore, horizon fades as the lights burn low, Fire stays the teeth, as you watch it burn, And cast off the stone that your mind has grown Waters return That single purpose Colour fades Left ashore Currents pull you Through shades of thought now Gaze into the Fathoms below Down, deeper down, past obsidian rock, The tide pulls harder, at sinew and bone, Fire stay the fear, as you watch it burn The waves rise to greet you, welcome you home Waters return That single purpose Colour fades Left ashore Currents pull you Through shades of thought now Gaze into the Fathoms below Devour the doubt with fire anew All paths have led to this moment Now written in time Captured eternal And cast to the floors Embrace the fire Harness the fear Stare through the abyss Scream Down, deeper down, freed from the bond Fathoms rise up, grasping and cold Memory ride past you down through the deep Face the faceless, tear open the door

Overwhelm 03:27
Face to the earth, stare through the eyes Wielding the stone, cut through the lies Search for the source of the agony sent Channel the frost of that winters lament Overwhelm this mortal core Draw from final form One last breath and your Cry becomes a storm Smother the earth, dress it in white Summer undone, the last fading light Shatter the doubt with the touch of your hand Spirit of winter now kneel where you stand Overwhelm this mortal core Draw from final form One last breath and your Cry becomes a storm The futures that lie here Below that tired space Truth ensnared in stone Answers ancient trace Imprinted through the strands Of past disaster wove Fraying spectre fades Pale upon the cold Violent the sea, treachery deep Awaken the hag, from darkest sleep Grasp firm the handle of iron and bone Imbue the stones with the memories torn Overwhelm this mortal core Draw from final form One last breath and your Cry becomes a storm

Close inside, earth pushes my hands Fleeting void, the great expanse Spins the disc Falling, monolith turns tight Silence That gloried radiance of Solar fire ignites above Hold fast To glittered stone or these Silvered days will be Undone This creation, this new perception Cursed to seek purpose, but never find That twice warped vision, twists the edges Undermined by response in kind Returning now from lucid dream To glimpse the shade beyond The root torn from the deeper soil That long since shattered bond Nightfall blue, and starlight lost Lunar white, eyes burn red Ghosts scream out at these transgressions Tearing into choice unsaid Skin stretched and muscles worn Time drags over, starlit tome Light below, the voices hollow Horizon calls to draw me home This creation, this new perception Cursed to seek purpose, but never find That twice warped vision, twists the edges Undermined by response in kind Returning now from lucid dream To glimpse the shade beyond The root torn from the deeper soil That long since shattered... No I will not go in silence I will carve this promise In fire If there is a way I will find it To return from white horizon Awakened under ash To witness this undone This creation, this new perception Cursed to seek purpose, but never find That twice warped vision, twists the edges Undermined by response in kind Returning now from lucid dream To glimpse the shade beyond The root torn from the deeper soil That long since shattered bond It takes it's toll Slips through the hand Wears the pillar Stones to sand It takes it's toll Slips through the hand Wears the pillar Stones to sand The book of steel The shattered bond Beckons relentless The truth beyond The book of steel The shattered bond Beckons relentless The truth beyond

MEDIA FEEDBACK:

90 / 100
"… very beautiful … plays with varying degrees of power, aggression and threat … can easily captivate …"
(Musika BE)

9 / 10
"… simply indefatigable … dark, undulating, homogeneous … holds bizarre surprises, whether it's a Black Metal insert, an unexpected drum theme, an instrument unrecognizable to the untrained ear … I really hope that this twenty-three minute EP is just the beginning of what the Scottish duo have in store for the Metal scene."
(Rozsdagyár)

4 / 5
"… infectious … keeping your body in a state of continuous motion, as the pulsating energy reaches the very depth of your soul … invigorating freshness … get 'Shade Beyond' in your ears!"
(Fjordhammer)

8 / 10
"Take equal parts Sojourner, Saor and Windfaerer and that gets you into the general area … grows on you after repeated listens … a solid start and has a promising future ahead of them."
(Folk Metal NL)

8 / 10
"… a sound of their own … production sounds very professional … very great sounding atmospheric and melodic mixture of Folk, Black and Death Metal …"
(A Different Shade Of Black Metal)

8 / 10
"No two songs on this album sound alike; each has its own atmosphere, charisma, melody and can convince me right away ... an energetic work ... exciting ..."
(KOBZR Magazine)

"… HAND OF KALLIACH does a tremendous job at keeping that energy, power, and all the sensations that a rock-solid work of Folk Metal needs in order to succeed where many others might slack to help make 'Shade Beyond' not only an interesting debut but an immensely promising one at that."
(Head-banger Reviews)

"… Gaelic and Celtic overtones that can be normally heard in traditional Scottish Folk Music and blend it with Epic Metal sounds … incredible range of Folk and epic Metal production … distorted guitars and incredible growls performed by the husband, balanced with the orchestral softness in the background and the wife’s almost faerie-like vocals is an enchanting listening experience."
(Miss Mephistopheles)

"… extremely promising throughout its nearly 24 minutes."
(Headbanger ES)

"… brutal and independent … you can almost feel the cold, whipping wind on the Scottish coast in your living room! … like Primordial, Cruachan or Waylander … very interesting …"
(Crossfire Metal)

"… like catapulted to the Middle Ages … with bewitching and catchy melodies … varied and very rich musically … a very good discovery … to be followed very closely … I will not be surprised to find them quickly signed on a label for a next album … I recommend this band to the fans of bands like Insomnium, Eluveitie or Leaves' Eyes."
(Metal Alliance)

"Album Of The Week … blending Death Metal with plenty of melody and Celtic folk components to create something exceptional and unlike anything else … give this independently-released debut EP a shot and see for yourself just how eclectic and satisfying our subculture can at times be! Be sure to follow …"
(ViaOmega)

"… if you love the darkest edges of the Metal genre and want something different I strongly urge you to check out this unique band with a unique vision that they will not compromise on."
(#560Reviews)

"An amazing work, personal and convincing, extreme and atmospheric with Folk parts reduced to the essential and, above all, performed by electric guitars with minimal inserts of other instruments … if you want a comparison on the way to compose and insert these parts, the Irish Primordial come to mind. Hand Of Kalliach prove to have a great potential and give us hope for future productions."
(The Murder Inn)

"… 'Shade Beyond' could be the soundtrack for those gloomy and cold days that are typical of Scotland and that we Folk/Viking metal lovers dream of in all seasons … fascinating …"
(Mister Folk)

"... definitely interesting for fans of any kind of Black Metal, but should probably appeal to one or two other listeners from other genres as well."
(Soundmagnet)

"… unique sound and unique atmosphere … creating an atmosphere with many layers and at the same time many effects that we cannot hear every day … atmospheric black … modern metal effects … neo-folk … industrial dark-wave and dramatically theatrical melodies … like a bridge we can walk between the magical melodies of the present and the past."
(Fémforgács)

"… great power and dynamics … a very noteworthy, unconventional debut …"
(Orkus Magazine)

"… fresh and authentic … a very passable debut …"
(Sonic Seducer Magazine)
